recovery success stories

I know this is not a healthy website to frequent when in anorexia recovery, so I try to be vigilant about avoiding triggering threads. That being said, I am determined to beat this horrible disease and live a REAL life.

One thing that has been helping me fight lately is by forcing myself to have positive thoughts. About myself, my future, the world in general... As I continue to seek health and freedom, I would appreciate any positive encouragement, particularly success stories. I feel like we hear SO much about people who relapse and relapse or fall in to different unhealthy behaviors. Can anyone out there give me some hope and positivity?

On another note, I feel like all I hear from long-time restrictors is how eventually they become bingers. Is this inevitable? It scares me to think that I will go from one horrible extreme to another horrible extreme. I'm hoping my recovery will take me to normalcy and balance. Is this possible? Thanks in advance for the support.

Drop 10 Success Story: "I Am Back to Loving Myself and Life. I Feel Unstoppable!"

Ten pounds down was just the beginning for Shannon Salvatoriello, of Brick, New Jersey. After losing those in just five weeks with SELF's Drop 10 plan this spring, she decided to keep going and has so far boosted her weight loss to an amazing 18 pounds. "I finally enjoy shopping again and love the way I look and feel," Salvatoriello says.

HER MOTIVATION

A mom of three young boys, Salvatoriello attributes her weight gain to pregnancy and having little time to focus on exercise or eating healthfully. After her youngest son was born, she decided to drastically change her life and lost all of her baby weight--and then some--using what she calls "good ol' fashioned" hard work. Eventually, though, she hit a weight-loss wall. "I'd lost 77 pounds in under a year, and then last October, I plateaued," she says. "I have the time, means, drive and dedication to hit my goal weight. I just needed to change things up to get over the hump."

Shannon Salvatoriello

THE PAYOFF

Salvatoriello added the Drop 10 workouts to her fitness routine, and found new favorite dishes in the meal plan. "I'm loving the lentils, which I had never really liked before trying the Drop 10 recipes. And the stuffed egg pita with the cream cheese is amazing--who knew to put cream cheese on eggs? It's out of this world!" With new meal ideas and workouts in her exercise arsenal, Salvatoriello is achieving the body she's always wanted. "I have a whole new outlook," she says. "I am literally ecstatic over my weight loss and the amazing compliments I get on a daily basis. It is so inspiring."

Now it's your turn: Sign up for the Drop 10 plan now and be on your way to losing two pounds a week!

Drop 10 Success Story: "I Haven't Felt This Good About Myself in a Long Time."

Tori Bachan, 21, of Brooklyn, New York, shed 10 pounds in five weeks (and counting!) with SELF's Drop 10 plan this spring. "I am so proud of all of the hard work I have been putting in and the results I continue to see on a daily basis," she says.

HER MOTIVATION

With her college graduation on the horizon, Bachan wanted to embrace a healthy lifestyle, but getting to the gym regularly and maintaining healthy eating habits--especially with her job as a music industry professional, which requires her to be on the road a lot--was a struggle. Instead of reaching for nutritious options, Bachan found herself in college dining halls or fast food joints, where healthy choices were harder to find.

Tori Bachan

THE PAYOFF

Courtesy of Drop 10, Bachan has a slew of new favorite healthy foods on her go-to menu. She keeps an eye out for Drop 10 superfoods when she's eating on the road, and when she's not traveling, she cooks more often rather than dining out. "I've been experimenting with quinoa," she says. "I make a breakfast quinoa with cut-up apples and cinnamon that tastes like apple pie in the morning--I'm obsessed." In general, her days are simply easier and more joyful. "The amount of energy I have now is insane. Plus, my confidence has skyrocketed. I feel better in my clothes, and it shows."

Now it's your turn: Sign up for the Drop 10 plan now and be on your way to losing two pounds a week!

Drop 10 Success Story: "I'm More Determined Than Ever to Reach My Fitness Goals."

Lucretia Barton, 29, of Fords, New Jersey, shed 10 pounds and completely changed her fitness outlook with our Drop 10 plan this spring. "I wanted to be as healthy as possible, and I knew that started with me. The Drop 10 Plan has given me a positive view on keeping junk out of my body and staying active."

HER MOTIVATION

Barton always struggled with her weight and felt stuck, not knowing what fitness or nutrition changes to make in order to improve her life. The New Jersey native even avoided looking in the mirror, unhappy with what she saw, feeling it didn't match the person she was inside.

Lucretia Barton

THE PAYOFF

Today, Barton is happy with her reflection: "When I look in the mirror now, I admire the changes I see. It makes my smile brighter, and I feel more confident in my own skin." The Drop 10 Plan helped her sort out which foods were best for fueling fat burn, but more importantly, it made her realize that she was eating for all the wrong reasons. "I learned you should eat to live, not live to eat." Her friends consider her an inspiration, and Barton is still following the Drop 10 Plan, with continued success. "Even though I have more work to do, I'm dedicated to keeping at it."

Now it's your turn: Sign up for the Drop 10 plan now and be on your way to losing two pounds a week!

Drop 10 Success Story: "SELF, You've Created a Fitness Monster!"

LaTisha Fletcher, 32, of Los Angeles, shed 8 pounds on our Drop 10 plan this spring. "This was a lifestyle change, not just a short-term goal. The more healthy foods I ate from the Drop 10 diet, the less I wanted crappy fast food or processed stuff."

HER MOTIVATION

Like every woman, Fletcher wanted to be the happiest, healthiest version of herself. And as a Los Angeles resident, she found herself surrounded by model and actor types--and was growing more and more self-conscious about the extra pounds hanging around her midsection. Her goal: getting bikini-ready by summer!

LaTisha Fletcher

THE PAYOFF

Not only did the Drop 10 plan melt off 8 pounds, it also revved Fletcher's confidence big-time and earned her the new nickname Health Nut among her friends. She's so proud of her new bod, she plans to enter the next International Federation of Body Building and Fitness pro bikini contest!

Now it's your turn: Sign up for the Drop 10 plan now and be on your way to losing two pounds a week!

Turn Slip Ups Into Success – Weekly Weigh In

If you don’t mind, I am just going to let my thoughts go for a minute.  Bear with me!

I’ve slipped.

I’ve slipped far and I’ve been slipping for quite a while.

This week’s Weight Watchers topic was PERFECT for me.  You know why?!?  Because I had a major slip up.

I gained 3.8 pounds.  I now weigh back in the 190's.  O-M-G!!!!

What defines us is how well we rise after falling. Rise Up!

It was a wake up call.  It was the wake up call I needed to get my butt back in gear.

I think last week when I only gained a little (and expected to gain a lot!), I thought I could continue to cheat and not gain.  Boy was I ever wrong.  I’m tired of it.

My clothes don’t fit good and I REFUSE to buy new ones.

I FEEL bad physically.  I have headaches again.

I don’t like the way I look in the mirror or some pictures that are taken.

I am gaining weight and It is time to stop.

The past eight months I have teeter tottered back and forth.  I looked back at my weight record and can CLEARLY see the steady gain.

weight watchers weight record Steady Gain since November….not good!

Who am I?!?  This week’s big gain was just what I needed to say, “Self…get it together.  Enough is enough!”

Plus, if I don’t do something before work starts, I won’t have any clothes to wear!

So…I am serious this time.  I have had enough.  I WILL turn this slip up into success.  It is simply a choice.  It is actually a whole bunch of small choices that add up.  I will make small, good choices that will add up to success.

This week’s meeting was perfect for me.  I have a choice.  I can continue to go in the wrong direction or I can get my act together, do what I KNOW I NEED to do and get back on track.

I choose success.  Which do YOU choose?

Thank you for letting me get my thoughts out.  This post made me very sad to write.  I feel like a fake.  I don’t feel like a weight loss role model.  However, I know in my heart those are lies.  We ALL go through downs.  I have gone through a down and I hope some of you can relate and feel encouraged to know you are not alone.  Let’s make it a great week!

Success Breeds Success

Success seems to be connected with action. Successful people keep moving. They make mistakes but they don't quit. So true!

I had a great, healthy weekend!  It’s about time!

I exercised BOTH days.

Saturday, I walked 15 minutes outside and then 30 on the treadmill (I was hoping to go longer on the treadmill but I had eaten dinner and I felt like I had a lead balloon in my tummy.  Just another reason not to wait so long to workout!).

Yesterday, I ended up walking 45 minutes on the treadmill and then mowing the lawn for another 40 minutes.

Did you know that you can burn some serious calories mowing the lawn with a push mower?  We have a nice sized lawn so it takes a little while to mow it.  Ladies, mowing the lawn is not just for men!  I love to get that extra calorie burn!

My eating was also on track this weekend.  I tried to limit my carbs, not eat any artificial sugar (sweets) and stay on track.  I did very well both days with this.  SO, when I got on the scale this morning (Thinking like a skinny person and skinny people weigh themselves often)…

I WAS SO HAPPY!

I felt like I had been successful!  No, it wasn’t down several pounds.  It was down several ounces.  But, if I can go down several ounces each day, they add up to several pounds.

I felt so successful that I wanted to make sure I stayed on track today so I could see success again tomorrow.  I realized that when I am successful, I want to be MORE successful.  Hence, success breeds success.

Sometimes it is the little realizations, that you have known in your head all along, that suddenly hit your heart.  I love those!

What success did you have this weekend?  It doesn’t have to be major.  Little things add up to big things!  Share your success with us so we can celebrate together!

Make it a great week!

Goal Setting Tools and Forms for Weight Loss Success.

Goal setting tools help for the bedrock of any weight loss program or fitness regimen. I've

learned, through trial and error, that without the right goals and ture vision, I was going to keep running my chubby little legs on the hamster wheel of weight loss.

Sure, I knew I wanted to be "fit." I knew I wanted to feel comfortable in my own sin. I wanted to like myself again. But, because my goals weren't clear and I had no practice in the art of active visualization, I had no real way to tell if I was getting real results.

So, I came across a few sources, namely Precision Nutrition and Burn the Fat, Feed the Muscle, and they talked about the importance of goal setting and how to do it properly. One of the best books on this subject I've read is Maximum Achievement by Brian Tracey. You can apply the whole book to any part of life, including your health and weight loss endeavors.

I reset and tweaked my goals, and learned how to visualize with passion. I felt it in my bones that my desires would manifest. They steadily have. Holy crap! This stuff works! Using my brain, mustering up some mojo, and utilizing a few goal setting tools started producing results.

I constantly upgrade my goals. I religiously track them, too. It helps give me the weight loss motivation I need. When I go about reassessing my goals and forming my new ones, I discovered they all fit under these four guidelines:

The 4 C's Of Goal Setting

Crystal Clear. You simply can't hit a target if you don't know what it is. Goals must be super precise. "Look sexy" = bad goal. "Be 12% Body Fat" = good goal.

Conquerable. Yes, goals must be big enough to scare you a little. They have to be grand enough to keep you motivated. Just make sure they're actually doable. Discouragement will plaque those who try for something that's not meant for their body. However, most anything is possible. Listen closely to the voice within and it'll give you your heading.Goal Setting Tools

Checklist Worthy. If it's not a goal that doesn't have an ending date, chuck it. If you'll never know exactly when you arrive at the finish line, you can't check it off your list. It's never accomplished. "Feel better in my skin" = bad. "Lose 2 lbs a week for ten weeks to achieve my goal weight of 130 lbs." = much better.

Charismatic. If your goal isn't imbued with passion, why the heck are you wasting your time with it? If you don't often wake up like a 6 year old on Christmas morning, geared up to work towards your goals, then it simply doesn't have enough fire power to keep your motivation flame glowing.

I've created a lot of tools and forms to help track my goals. I'm pretty pragmatic, and these tools help me make sure I'm heading down the path I've chosen. Below are some goal setting forms that you're free to download. Don't forget to use the calculators and charts to help you set your goals. And never give up. You really can do this. No matter where you are on your path, you are going to succeed. Just keep at it. Keep your eye on the prize. Success happens!!

Where to Find the Quotes?

Scroll down for motivational quotes.
I've hunted these babies out personally.
Gleaned from reading tons of books, magazines, watching interviews, and reading internet articles, this list I've compliled should help ya out!

Motivating quotes are always in super high demand for one reason: they work! They’re like a shot in the butt. They get our minds thinking on the right track.

Motivational quotes remind us of who we are and where we’re heading. They are a quick way to boost our morale, showering us with bits of truth that cut to the heart of what we need to be focusing on.

Here are a few things she told me. I wrote out the motivating quotes and and taped them to my closet door where I can see them every morning.
