Motivational Movies, Magazines, and Books

Do inspirational movies, books, and other media resources actually work? Of course they do. Motivation is not a one time thing. It's a healthy part of a daily life. Daily. Every single one. If you don't fill your tank with higher thoughts and images, you'll run dry.

It's not exactly a quick fix we're talking about here. I mean, yeah, you watch Rocky and get pumped up and want to start running up stairs and drinking eggs, but that only lasts for a short while, maybe for a few days or workouts. So, in a sense, it is a quick fix.

But, it's not just the simplistic fix we need to be after. Its an environment. By constantly exposing yourself to positive people, methods, images, and inspiring stories, it lifts your consciousness. Little by little, day by day, you're building a solid foundation of success.

Let's say your day consisted of the following:

•You woke up and visualized your ideal body in detail before getting out of bed.
•You watched a motivational mind movie before answering morning email.
•You read and affirmed all the little sticky note goals you've put around the house or office.
•You watched a few youtube clips of transformations and other motivators during a lunch break.
•You watched a movie featuring rock hard muscles for your movie night.
•You read from a motivational book that you're working through right before bed.
•As you turn off your light to go to sleep, you ingest the motivational quotes written on your nightstand.

Military man readingAre you beginning to see how if you surround yourself with success, the chances of failure are quite slim? Let me repeat: it's an environment of success we're after. A positive field. Filling your mind with thoughts that are in synch with your goals and aspirations is one of the most important life tasks.

I'm compiling a list of motivational resources below. They can be of great use. Commit to incorporate one new resource into your life a day. Fitness success will be imminent.

All the Rocky Movies (duh)
GI Jane
Wolverine - No matter your gender, you've gotta dig those shoulders!
Fight Club - Holy moly. And holy moly again.
Under the Tuscan Sun - Anything can be done.
DOA - Cheesy, but awesome chicks. Jamie Pressly cracks me up.
Gladiator - Hard and true.
Without Limits - Rude guy, but big dreams.
The Secret - It's a shame it's so commercial and simplistic, but it definitely has its place.
300 - Haven't seen it, but it left my sons super pumped for a loooooong time.

Simple Truths has some great short movies that rock. They hit home and help you refocus on the truth that you really can do, be, and have what you're after. Here's some of their titles:

Goal Setting Tools and Forms for Weight Loss Success.

Goal setting tools help for the bedrock of any weight loss program or fitness regimen. I've

learned, through trial and error, that without the right goals and ture vision, I was going to keep running my chubby little legs on the hamster wheel of weight loss.

Sure, I knew I wanted to be "fit." I knew I wanted to feel comfortable in my own sin. I wanted to like myself again. But, because my goals weren't clear and I had no practice in the art of active visualization, I had no real way to tell if I was getting real results.

So, I came across a few sources, namely Precision Nutrition and Burn the Fat, Feed the Muscle, and they talked about the importance of goal setting and how to do it properly. One of the best books on this subject I've read is Maximum Achievement by Brian Tracey. You can apply the whole book to any part of life, including your health and weight loss endeavors.

I reset and tweaked my goals, and learned how to visualize with passion. I felt it in my bones that my desires would manifest. They steadily have. Holy crap! This stuff works! Using my brain, mustering up some mojo, and utilizing a few goal setting tools started producing results.

I constantly upgrade my goals. I religiously track them, too. It helps give me the weight loss motivation I need. When I go about reassessing my goals and forming my new ones, I discovered they all fit under these four guidelines:

The 4 C's Of Goal Setting

Crystal Clear. You simply can't hit a target if you don't know what it is. Goals must be super precise. "Look sexy" = bad goal. "Be 12% Body Fat" = good goal.

Conquerable. Yes, goals must be big enough to scare you a little. They have to be grand enough to keep you motivated. Just make sure they're actually doable. Discouragement will plaque those who try for something that's not meant for their body. However, most anything is possible. Listen closely to the voice within and it'll give you your heading.Goal Setting Tools

Checklist Worthy. If it's not a goal that doesn't have an ending date, chuck it. If you'll never know exactly when you arrive at the finish line, you can't check it off your list. It's never accomplished. "Feel better in my skin" = bad. "Lose 2 lbs a week for ten weeks to achieve my goal weight of 130 lbs." = much better.

Charismatic. If your goal isn't imbued with passion, why the heck are you wasting your time with it? If you don't often wake up like a 6 year old on Christmas morning, geared up to work towards your goals, then it simply doesn't have enough fire power to keep your motivation flame glowing.

I've created a lot of tools and forms to help track my goals. I'm pretty pragmatic, and these tools help me make sure I'm heading down the path I've chosen. Below are some goal setting forms that you're free to download. Don't forget to use the calculators and charts to help you set your goals. And never give up. You really can do this. No matter where you are on your path, you are going to succeed. Just keep at it. Keep your eye on the prize. Success happens!!

Summer Is Coming!

Spring Break means summer is coming!

I’ve got good news and bad news.

Bad news is:  Spring Break is over.

Good news is:  Summer is Coming!

Being in Florida this past week has gotten me in the mood for summer!  I got up when I woke up (no alarm!).  I enjoyed my coffee while reading blogs and checking Facebook.  Then, I went out for a nice long workout every day.  After that, I spent some time in the sun, caught up on blogging, and truly enjoyed relaxation.

When Kristen and I were driving into Destin on Thursday, I was quickly reminded that in two short months, I would be back there at the beach with my family.  I would very much like to be wearing a new swimsuit and weigh less.

If I think, “I need to lose 12 pounds before summer, that is a bit overwhelming!”  If I break it down into weeks, it seems much more manageable.

I have 10 weeks until we leave for the beach.  If I want to lose 12 pounds before then, I need to lose 1.2 pounds a week.  1.2 pounds a week sounds much more do-able than losing 12 pounds before summer.

So, that’s my summer goal.  The last time I weighed in at Weight Watchers, I weighed 185.  By the time I leave for the beach, in 10 weeks, I would like to weigh 173.

I know what to do.  I just need to do it!

Do you have vacation plans for this summer?  How would you like to look out on the beach?  Set a goal, make a plan, and then break it down by pounds per week so it is more manageable.  Then, share it with us so we can all be accountable to one another!

Summer is Coming…will you be ready?

Healthy Snack Recipes

Healthy snack recipes are mandatory to staying on any nutrition program. Hunger is an unfortunate, but necessary, part of any weight loss endeavor. Sorry to burst your bubble, if you were thinking you could achieve an awesome body without suffering a bit.

When your body is burning away fat, you are basically cannibalizing yourself. Can you say, "Ouch?!" All those pleasurable moments you've spent horking down cookies and pizza... Did you think you wouldn't have to pay for that?

Come on, now. You know better!

So, hunger is part of the package. But, that doesn't mean we need to be masochistic about it. There are a few tricks you can do to tame the pain.

1. Eat Frequently. Meals and healthy snacks spaced 2-3 hours a part helps not only speed your metabolism, but it will keep something in you belly most of the time.

2. Balance Each Meal. Now, you don't need to be very particular about macronutrient ratios necessarily, but if you eat a little food from at least two of these groups during a meal or snack, it will help satiate you. For example, combine fruit and oatmeal, or nuts and cottage cheese, not just a protein shake.

3. Guzzle Water. Never end a meal or snack without downing at least 16 ounces of water. It'll bloat your belly enough to leave you not wanting more food.

healthy snack recipes4. Nutrition Powerhouses. Fill up with healthy snack recipes containing nutrient dense foods, not garbage, even if your calorie plan will allow for it. You can have a cup of broccoli with a 1/3 cup of rice, plus an apple for around 200 calories. Or you could have slightly less than a 1/2 cup of ice cream. Which will fill you up more?

5. Fillers. Okay, most of the time fillers are bad for your body, but I'm talking natural fillers here. Fiber. Celery, wheat bran, mushrooms, etc. Bulk for little calories. Make it count!

Get a simple or as creative as you like when whipping up your own healthy snack recipes. I tend to just grab something easy, instead of concocting some elaborate dish. Time is, more times than not, higher on my priority list that fancy foods.

Here are some simple, weight loss recipes for your snacking pleasure. Just scroll down. Sign up for the newsletter to be informed when new recipes are posted.

Fun Exercise: Ice Skating

Last Saturday we went ice skating!

Ice skating

I haven’t been in a few years so I thought I might break my neck but I got up to speed pretty quickly. I only fell twice and though my knee ended up badly bruised from one fall I felt it went well.

Mary kepa ice skating

I’ve loved spending the last couple of weeks doing new fun active things with Kepa. This time we went with a few friends and now we are all looking forward to more adventures (especially a snowboarding trip this year).

Ice skatingn

Finding a bunch of cool daily deals that allow us to try different things at half price has been awesome. GrabOne has been my best friend lately giving us ideas for fun things to do at half price. I love doing these kinds of activities that are both fun and active. It’s made being in New Zealand a lot more fun to be honest.

Ice skatin

Ice skating for over an hour was a pretty great workout that didn’t even feel like work because it was fuuuuun! It isn’t something I do often so it was a nice switch from normal cardio activities.

On a different note…

While I love blogging, I’ve noticed I really needed/need a break. I haven’t felt like blogging yet this week and last week felt forced. That’s a sign that I need a blog break at least from this blog and all the stuff that goes with it in my head. I’m doing well with the fitness and food and finally actually lost weight… but I still need a break from posting so often and thinking about the blog.

I’m probably going to keep a slow/whenever-I-feel-like-it posting schedule for a while. There is a lot going on right now that makes me think I just needed to slow things here for a minute and focus on other things. And you know… just be me. Mary without the blog. So yeah. It was a good break and the forward blogging plan feels good.

Love you guys. Keep chasing your healthy and happy lives. Go ice skating or do something fun! <3

Head In The Clouds

Sometimes new ideas excite me so much I get WAY AHEAD of myself. I get super duper excited about things to the point where other people laugh about how ridiculous I am.

Sometimes it gets to the point where I forget what I should be doing IN THE MOMENT.

Which is why today I went to the gym to workout and left halfway through when I realized I had forgotten to do something very important earlier. Oops.

I still managed a decent amount of exercise though:

I’ll take 312 calories burned over zero!

Today (and yesterday and this week in general) I’ve been a bit distracted and excited and wound up by my new big ideas. It happens every so often. I probably shouldn’t get so wrapped up in new things that I forget the other – often important – stuff I still need to do. Priorities still matter!

This post is more just a note to myself to slow down and back away from the new ideas than it is anything else. Writing it down like this makes me remember to chill and get the rest of my life organized.

So that’s where I’ll be if you need me. Cleaning rooms and paying bills and doing the boring stuff so nothing else gets forgotten when I go back to daydreaming.

Fun Cardio Workouts

Loving cardio workouts? Does that sound like a joke? Do you know why most people never attain high fitness levels, or lose it once they've managed to get there? They don't love the process, the lifestyle. They just do the cardio to get it over with, viewing it as necessary evil. They eek by with as little as possible and dread it.

So, here's a question for you: Can you keep doing something you despise for the rest of your life? Would you even want to? I know I wouldn't.

See, the expletive in this article should be "FUN."

The old adage still holds true; find something you love to do, or it'll never stick. When you can do that, it ceases to be a battle of willpower. It will not be a struggle. Do you have to force yourself to hang out with your friends? Of course not, because you love to do it. What about surfing on the internet or winning some cash? Would that be drudgery to you? If you love something, you naturally gravitate towards it. It easily becomes integrated into your life. AND YOU LIKE IT. Isn't that what we want for exercise program? To love it for life?

Cardio Sweat

I struggled for years with weight fluctuation. I'd pound out the cardio, just swallowing it down only for the results. Inevitably, I'd tire of it, and quit. And the pounds would come right back on. It wasn't until I, quite accidentally, stumbled upon an activity that wooed me, that I effectively wove fitness into my life. Permanently.

For me, it's running. For my husband, it's baseball. For you, it may be biking, or gymnastics, or chasing chickens on the farm. It doesn't matter. But, when you find something you love, you'll know it by the incredible momentum you have with your routine. You'll wake up charging like a rhino to do your cardio workouts. In fact, it'll take force to STOP you from doing your cardio.

Okay, now let's assume we all have our favorite activity that we get in at least 3-5 times a week. Just because of the nature of humans, we can tend to get lazy or stuck in a rut. Boredom is a common enemy to progress and we all have to be prepared for battle. Plus, if you don't spice things up, the flame of desire for your choice cardio will be endangered. Here are some ways I've used to make cardio workouts fun and to take it the next level.

Add Power
Regardless of your cardio flavor, there's always room for power to boost your fitness results. For example, if I run moderately for 4 miles, I can add a short spirit in between each one. Or, I could stop after each song ends, and do a few pushups or plyometrics. Or, I could run faster than normal for the entire run. Adding power takes little time and keeps you growing.

Love Your Enemy
Even though you love your cardio workouts, there will likely be an aspect of them that your not very fond of. If you're a biker, you may hate big hills. If you love racquetball, maybe you don't like all the backwards maneuverings. So, how to solve this? Tackle it head on. Find your weak area, and become determined to make it a strong point. Spend portions of your cardio workout doing nothing but biking up hills or running backwards. You'll surprise yourself at how empowered you'll feel.

Do it Differently
Find a way to change a variable in your cardio workouts to breathe new life into it. You could change the setting (like swim in open water instead of your normal pool swim, or mountain bike instead of road bike.) You could change the company you're with (ask a new friend to come with you, or join a club.) You can even change the whole style of your cardio (try track sprints instead of long runs.) You'll become a better athlete and stay on top of your game.

Add an Element
Add something totally new to your cardio routine. How about a different music style? A new trainer? I added a weighted vest during some of my runs. A friend of mine added swimming to her bikes and runs to try triathlon. Don't be afraid to branch out. You just might find another sport that floats your boat.

Enter a Challenge
Find a specific challenge that'll force you to focus your efforts and add accountability. A race, a competition, a personal record challenge - anything that has a deadline and pushes you to excel. Because really, what's life without the ebb and flow of facing new challenges and continually pushing through your boundaries, reaching new heights of success?

Fun cardio is not an oxymoron. Unless you embrace exercise as a natural part of life, just like eating, sleeping, and brushing your teeth; wholeness and health will elude you. and that awesome physique won't last long. let's put a stop to human homeostatis and take part in conscious evolvement, for better bodies and better lives.

Using Negativity as a Catalyst for Change: Motivation for Weight Loss

Negativity oftentimes slaps us smack in the face, especially when we’re at our lowest point.  Using negativity in reverse fashion can help you turn it into a powerful catalyst for change, and help fuel your motivation for weight loss.

Negativity is irrespective of persons.  From corporate downsizing to stubbed toes, crap happens.  Let’s say you’re feeling kind of schlumpy.  Then, bam!  A friend remarks that you’ve put on a few pounds.  A friend called me up in tears recently over an episode like this. It happens to best of us.

The question, then, isn’t will negativity cross your path, but what you will do about it when it does.  Will you allow it to seep into your subconscious, letting those seeds of negativity take root?  Conversely, will you simply allow them to fall by the wayside and shrivel up?

Most people seem to choose of the above options.  If someone comments on your weight, for example, you may choose option one and allow that thought to set up house in your mind.   You may get discouraged, and your subconscious will start to believe and act on that input.  Your mind, with the aid of that nasty thought, may trick you into believing you don’t deserve or can’t achieve the body you’re after.  Acting on that internal dialogue, you may unconsciously eat more, exercise less, and eventually prove the negative statement true.

Sound far-fetched?  Hardly.  You can trace any manifestation back to a root thought.

Catalyst for Change, CC Liscense by AlasisLet’s say you’re more optimistic, though, and you choose option two, allowing the snarky comment to roll of your back.  You may deny the statement and let it go, wasting zero time on it.  This tactic is pretty effective at annihilating unwanted thoughts.

Option two may look like the wiser choice, and indeed it is better than option one.  However, I’d like to present you with a third option; one that requires a little fortitude, but has the potential to yield much greater results.  This equivocates into more motivation for weight loss using negativity as fodder and a catalyst for change.

Let’s stay with the example of someone commenting on your weight.  It happens frequently to my clients and it affects everyone nearly the same way;  either anger or self-loathing.  Instead of spiraling into negativity or ignoring the comment, why not take a good, hard look at the facts, how they make you feel, and use that knowledge as fuel to bring about the change you wish to see.

Yes, a comment like, “Hey, you packing a few extra pounds?,” or “So, when are you due?” (when you’re not even pregnant) stings your ego.  It may push you to cower, refute, or even retaliate.  Likely, you’ll just want to go wolf down a pint of ice cream or another comfort food to reduce the stinging.

Instead, as soon as you become aware of what’s happening, why not try a technique called VAPOR?  Using this simple method, you can successfully (albeit not easily) use negativity as a catalyst for change.

Read about how I use VAPOR (Validate, Accept, Plan, Obstinate, Results) and how this simple mental technique can bring about rapid motivation for weight loss.  I’m sure not many coaches tell you, “Don’t waste the negativity,” but I am!  Consider it a gift.  Read the article here: How to Use VAPOR as Motivation for Weight Loss (coming June 1)
