First BB Cream For Skin, Then Hair...Now BB Tea?

You guys KNOW we love our BB (and CC) creams. They're great for a post-gym skin fix, not to mention just generally giving your face a well-nourished, even-toned glow. And then there was Pantene, who came out with BB cream for hair -- which blew our minds, but only in the best way possible.

Now, the BB craze has made it's way into our mouths -- in the form of tea. Launched by Kusmi, the chic French tea company, the loose-leaf BB Detox Tea is designed to make you get gorgeous, too. But does it really work, especially with a price tag of $20?

First of all, this is literally the most delicious tea I've had...ever. It's a mix of mate, grapefruit, green tea and rooibos (which I can never pronounce) that's light and refreshing and, yep, caffeinated, to give you a sweet buzz, too.

Kusmi says the combo of green tea and mate help de-puff your entire body, while green tea, dandelion and roobios fight off free radicals cause they're chockfull of antioxidants. Did I see that result immediately? Honestly, I'm too much of a strung out mess from grad school finals to tell.

But, I am sure about one thing. I look way better when I drink a ton of water and this stuff is a great way to hydrate without feeling like a fish. I brewed the stuff hot -- and iced  -- and wanted more every time. In fact, I wish I had a mug right now...

Facebook Home on HTC First Available Today, 5 Things You Need to Know

Facebook Home Info

Last week Mark Zuckerberg unveiled Facebook Home for Android. It's not a Facebook phone, it's not an operating system, and it's not an app. Zuck says it's a way to "put people first instead of apps."

So, what is it?

I'd tell my grandma it's a Facebook screen saver.

When your phone is resting, photos and status updates from your newsfeed are visible, and even if your phone is locked, you can still like and comment on posts.

Facebook will now be at the core of your mobile experience (as if it's not already dominating social in so many ways). And today, you can buy the HTC First, which comes pre-installed with Facebook Home for $99 with a two-year contract. Nothing is in the works for iOS.

The 5 things you should care about:

Your Newsfeed (and your friends baby pics) will be everywhere: From the moment you turn on your phone, you'll see your newsfeed, status updates, and all - not just FB - notifications (new email, Twitter mentions, Instagram likes)Chat heads: Functionality allows you to seamlessly keep chatting with friends from any app. Data: Since Facebook Home is constantly downloading status updates and photos, consider changing your image quality setting to "low" so that you're not draining monthly data. The default setting is "medium" but you can also change to "high." Privacy: If you want to try Facebook Home and then decide you don't like it, you can turn it off in your Home Settings. And If you like Home but don't want it to appear as your lock screen, you have that option too. Other Droids: Not in the market for a new HTC First? Users who own the HTC One X, HTC One X+, Samsung Galaxy S III or the Samsung Galaxy II can download Home for free from the Google Play store.

So, are you gonna go get Facebook Home? Tweet us @StephaniePaige and @SELFMagazine.

For First Time, Pain 'Signature' Spotted on Brain MRIs

Scientists could distinguish physical from emotional pain, discomfort in studyScientists could distinguish physical from

By Amy Norton

HealthDay Reporter

WEDNESDAY, April 10 (HealthDay News) -- For the first time, scientists say they've found evidence that physical pain may leave a distinct "signature" in the brain that can be picked up with specialized MRI scans.

The study looked only at short-term pain in healthy people, but researchers hope the findings will lead to better understanding of complex conditions such as chronic severe headaches or fibromyalgia.

When researchers exposed healthy volunteers to a painful dose of heat, it left a reliable pattern of brain activity that could be viewed on functional MRI (fMRI) -- a type of imaging that charts changes in blood flow through the brain.

That so-called "neurologic signature" was able to predict people's subjective pain ratings with more than 90 percent accuracy, and it distinguished heat-induced pain from other feelings -- like warmth, and even emotional pain.

Experts said the findings, reported in the April 11 New England Journal of Medicine, hint at a way to objectively measure people's pain. Right now, that's done subjectively -- often, by having patients rate their pain on a scale of 1 to 10.

But the point is not to catch patients in a lie, stressed lead researcher Tor Wager, an associate professor of psychology and neuroscience at the University of Colorado at Boulder.

"This is not a pain lie-detector test, and it should not be used that way," Wager said. "People in pain need to be believed."

A pain expert not involved in the study agreed, but said objective measures might be useful in getting more information. "There are times when a patient isn't able to communicate about pain effectively -- for example, after a stroke," said Dr. Jing Wang, an assistant professor of anesthesiology at NYU Langone Medical Center, in New York City.

In other cases, patients' descriptions of their pain might not be completely reliable, such as when they have a mental illness. Both Wang and Wager said it would be helpful to have a way to complement patients' pain reports with an objective measure -- which in many cases might suggest that patients are in more pain than they are letting on, or in more pain than a doctor believes.

"We know that right now many people have their pain undertreated," Wager noted.

But scientists are a long way from using fMRI scans to gauge pain, according to Wang at NYU. "This is a comprehensive, meticulous study," he said, but added that it's also an early step.

One big caveat is that the study volunteers were all healthy and exposed to just one type of pain -- short-lived pain from heat applied to the skin. Wang said researchers need to see whether this same brain "signature" would appear in people with chronic pain conditions, or pain after surgery, for example.

surpassed my first goal

My son is 1 already, when I started this, he was only 2-3 months old. I'm pleased to say that after tipping the scales to 335 3 weeks after he was born, now 3 weeks after his first birthday, I'm looking down at 292.5. Goal 1: break below 300--check! (I had never seen then number on the scale, it scared me.) Goal 2: break below pre-baby weight (286)--here I come!

Non teenage first time ED advice *possibly triggering?*

Hello. This is my first post here, though I've been looking up posts on this forum for a while.
Essentially, I feel I could do with a little support/advice from anyone who's been in a position they feel is similar. Also, from anyone who has recovered further than I have.

I'm currently 26 years old. I am 5'5 . I have a lifelong history of depression. For the first time at the age of 24, and a weight of roughly 10st 5lbs (145lbs, and I now believe this to be my 'set-point'), I began to seriously restrict my eating, and began to lose weight. The rate of loss seemed to be exponential, and by christmas of that year (6 months into restriction), people were telling me I looked 'better'. I was probably around 9st 4lbs at that point. I was still having periods, but generally lacked energy, due to over-restriction.

By my 25th birthday in the spring, I had lost roughly another 10lbs. I had also been on the mini pill for a month. My periods had been irregular for about 3 months, and dwindled for a couple more months, then stopped. This did not deter me from losing weight. I assumed it was entirely down to the birth control (which I was only on for a month - I had to stop due to the hormones affecting my state of mind) and so kept on restricting. At this point I was walking several miles each day, obsessively, and playing sport twice a week, for an hour or two at a time.

Around July, I recognised that something was wrong with my mental state, and at around 8st, sought help. This took several attempts, as three different doctors were astoundingly dismissive as I was not YET in the high risk weight range, and am quite bulky in appearance. The one doctor who took me seriously referred me for therapy (though I didn't get access to this until around christmas just gone).

By November, I had dropped to around 7st, and just before christmas, dropped to about 6st 12lbs. I had made a couple of fairly pathetic attempts at recovery, but clearly this was not yet happening.

To cut the rest short. I began therapy around christmas time, and now, 6 months later, have gained up to around 9st. I still have no period. I still struggle a great deal, and restrict a little on some days. I'm having a lot of trouble adjusting to my body the way it is now. I've been at or around my current weight for about 2 months.

If anyone has any experience of people who have developed eating disorders for the first time this late in life, and then if anyone has recovered menstruation subsequently.

Thank you, and sorry about the length of the post.

Daughter's Anger after First Appointment with Psychologist

I hope you can help I am at my wits end.  My daughter has had her first meeting with the psychologist at the Eating Disorder Clinic.  She hated her, is full of anger and is saying she made her feel fat, talked of weight gain and made her feel bad as she binges twice a week on chocolate.  She says she doesn't want to recover because recovery  means weight gain.  She doesn't seem to be able to cope with anything in life.  She has such distorted thoughts, thinks she is fat and is so depressed and anxious around food.  She also has to eat the same things every day at the same time.  She also does two hours of yoga per day and walks the dog for an hour.  This illness has taken over her life.  After seeing the Psychologist she is now wanting to lose more weight has cut out diet coke and cups of teas.  She's worse now than before she went.  My daughter has had anorexia for one year plus and disordered eating for at least 3 years.  Is this reaction normal.  I can't let her cancel the next appointment.  We have waited so long for this appointment.  I never thought this would happen.

http://bit.ly/13VVpCk – Men’s
http://bit.ly/Z7TOoB – Women’s

THE 10 WINNERS:

It was hugely difficult to narrow these down, but here are 10 that my magic elves and I particularly liked. Thank you to everyone how commented!

1. Adam Brady
Connection for me occurs when purpose meets emotion. You can do things with purpose but without emotion and you can do things emotionally but without purpose, “connection” is when the two sentiments converge. Many individuals work with the purpose of making a living, and many play for the pure emotion of joy but, when one finds a calling or activity that speaks to them they become connected, and that work/activity is executed with both purpose and joy.
My favorite body weight exercises are pull-ups, push-ups, mountain climbers, deep squats and planks. 5 exercises, whole body, simple and effective.

2. Connor Grooms
It is inherently foolish to try to put words to connection. Connection is not possible to describe, just like the tao, “The Tao that can be spoken is not the eternal Tao. The name that can be named is not the eternal name”. Connection is what makes life worth living, what makes relationships deep, and what makes being alone in wild Nature feel so freeing. There are more literal meanings, but those are insufficient.

Best body weight exercise is Pullups, especially ones on door frames (grip strength)

3. Rachel
When we feel our hearts beating, blood pulsing in our veins, and our breath moving inside of us we are fully alive…we are in connection with ourselves and we are connected to all other living things. Connection is life.
Yoga is connection and is by far my favorite body-weight only exercise for mind, body and spirit!

4. Mike Gopsill
Connection is the noun for Kevin Bacon, who is always connected, by 4GEE and by six degrees.
My favourite bodyweight-only exercises are dips because they are isolated and intense, a one-handed pushup (Rocky-style) and I like a Turkish getup with no weight if that counts.
Great post Tim, looking forward to getting outside myself when the UK summer kicks in.

5. Edmundo Gurza
What does “connection” mean to you??A connection is the perfect mix of focus and calmness, which allows you to be in the moment with all your senses. Whether it is with a person, a task or nature, being in the moment and allowing the connection to happen opens your senses to bring clarity and be able to focus on what is surrounding you.
What are your favorite bodyweight-only exercises??- squats (such a natural movement that has been so lost in our culture)?- anything handstand-ish (pushups, holds, one handed, etc)?- and of course pullups

6. Rebecca
Connection is intangible, invisible and undeniable. Felt as an energy toward someone or something, our ears perk up, our eyes open wide and our hearts start to flutter.
It sneaks up on you when you least expect it. It grabs you by the heart and says “listen up!” It is the extra “something” that we often cannot put words to because there are some things in life that are too unique and special to name or label.
Best body weight exercise is full body squats in sets that make you wonder if you are going to be able to get off the toilet later! :0)

7. Drew
Connection, to me personally, is what I felt the first time I went to Brazil, speaking no Portuguese, and met a Japanese Brazilian girl who didn’t speak English. We had the strongest CONNECTION I had ever felt. We had a “chemical”, as she said, using her English dictionary.
8 years later: she is fluent in English, I am fluent in Portuguese, and we are married.
My favorite bodyweight exercises are the ones that use leverage and creativity to create extreme difficulty – one-armed pushup and one-armed pullup.

8. Ryan Ripley
Connection – a strange attractor that leads to unpredictable interractions and consequences.
Favorite body weight exercise: Face the wall squats (RKC)

9. Monica Ridgway
For me, “connection” means surrender, at least to some extent, allowing unity with whatever one is connecting with – be it nature, God, oneself, a dance partner, a spouse, a friend, or whatever. In order to connect, we have to let go of our own need for control, let go of preconceived ideas and agendas, and allow the external to enter and exert power over us. This surrender and connection changes us, the whole more than the sum of its parts.
As for favorite body-weight-only exercises, my top choice has always been dance. From the strict forms of ballet and modern dance, to ballroom and swing, to the nearly-formless bouncing and shimmying to be witnessed in nightclubs, to break dancing, dance involves all parts of the body – particularly the core – and it is also a great cardio workout. Dance is also an excellent way of connecting, be it with music – giving your body over to the music to drive your movement – or with a partner – surrendering the self to move together as one body.

10. Mark Greenman
1. For me, “connection” means a lot of things, but when I first read it, the connection I thought of was the feeling I get when I connect with a particularly well designed piece of gear, something that has been designed for exactly what I need it to do, and expresses itself instantly. But then I’m a gear nerd!

FDA OKs First OTC Remedy for Overactive Bladder

womens restroom sign

Jan. 25, 2013 -- The FDA has approved Oxytrol for Women, the first over-the-counter treatment for overactive bladder in women 18 and older.

The condition affects more than 20 million American women, according to Merck, the drug's manufacturer.

Oxytrol helps relax the overactive bladder muscle that leads to symptoms such as the sudden need to urinate and leaking of urine.

It will still only be available in prescription form for men.

Oxytrol for Women is in the form of a patch, applied to the skin every four days, Merck says.

It is expected to hit store shelves by the fall. No cost estimates are yet available, according to Merck.

Oxytrol in pill form by prescription will still be available. Oxytrol for Women contains oxybutynin, a drug that helps to relax the bladder muscle. It belongs to a class of drug called anticholinergics. It is the first of this class to go over-the-counter for overactive bladder treatment.

Each patch delivers 3.9 milligrams of the drug every day.

The FDA approved the drug after reviewing its safety and effectiveness in nine studies involving more than 5,000 women. According to the FDA, the study participants could understand the label information and use the drug appropriately.

Among side effects reported in the studies were skin irritation at the site of the patch, constipation, and dry mouth. Merck will supply an educational leaflet with the product.

Most women who develop overactive bladder are 45 to 60 years old. Many do not seek professional medical help due to embarrassment.

According to the National Association for Continence, those who suffer with bladder problems wait on average seven years before seeking treatment.

Among other prescription medications for the condition are fesoterodine (Toviaz),  solifenacin (Vesicare) and tolterodine (Detrol).

Bladder training and pelvic floor exercises are other common treatment options.
