5 Sunscreens We Love for Summer

You guys know May is Skin Cancer Awareness Month, right? Well, you should by now (!) -- we've already hosted an event, Mole-Check Monday, where we offered Flywheel riders free skin checks, and told you about those life-saving letters, ABCDE, too. Well in order to protect yourself, you've gotta use some SPF. But not just any old SPF that you find -- and definitely none of that tanning oil. Here, some of our favorite sunscreens for summer.

Tested under the most extreme athletic conditions -- as in, on marathon runners, this new sport-specific SPF doesn't interfere with your workout and is proven to feel comfortable on the skin. Key benefits include wear-off resistance from water, wiping and rubbing, aka no more burning, itchy eyes. The formula is also fortified with Artemia Salina which increases skin's resistance to UV and heat stress and protects collagen from UV damage. Bonus? It gives the skin a moisture boost to defend against the sun's drying effects.

With such a hefty pricetag, we had to ask -- what makes this lotion really worth it? Well, for starters, Restorsea products have serious anti-aging properties, thanks to antioxidant vitamin C, brown algae (which increases skin's elasticity) and the patented "Aquabeautine XL," which is a "natural enzyme released during the baby salmon hatching process." Mmmkay. Salmon or not, this supremely lightweight lotion also contains 20% zinc oxide, giving it an SPF of 30. We're also digging the box's bonus tips for how to stay safe in the sun. Use it as your only moisturizer, or apply over a heavier cream if your skin is naturally dry. And if this wasn't enough, in support of Skin Cancer Awareness Month,10 percent of the proceeds from the sale of this lotion at Bergdorf Goodman during the month of May will be donated to the Melanoma Research Alliance.

If you're the type that sets and spikes during beach volleyball, hits the ocean for a dip and lays out in a lounge chair, this sunscreen is for you. Featuring Neutrogena's famous Helioplex technology (which contains avobenzene and oxybenzone to aid in broad spectrum protection), this SPF-70 choice is super-easy to apply thanks to its 360-degree spray can and is water resistant for 80 minutes. Plus, it smells like summer. (Maybe I just need a vacation?)

Not enough time in the day? This brush-on formula is for you. Made from mineral powders, Brush On Block has the same traits that mineral makeup does -- it's natural, non-irritating and easy to apply. And if you're the type of lady running between appointments, parties or just around town, you'll needn't stress -- this powder applies invisibly. Really, don't sweat it: this SPF is water resistant for up to eighty minutes. Did we mention the company sells refills, so it's way eco-friendly, too?

Although this line was made for the kiddies, it works well on those with uber-sensitive skin, too. This latest sunscreen from the line is formulated with zinc oxide, a natural mineral that's considered the safest and most effective ingredient that is less likely to irritate teh skin and more likely to block harmful UVB and UVA rays. But remember when people would have, like, streaks of colored zinc down their noses? No longer, pretties: this SPF rubs on clear in seconds. The sweet smell after application is just a bonus benefit, BTW.

Sun Safety Guide

May is Skin Cancer Awareness Month, so take this moment to think: When was the last time you saw a derm? And have you done a self-exam recently?

We know, we know, we're nagging. But according to the Skin Cancer Foundation, skin cancer is the most common of all cancers, affecting more than two million Americans each year. What's more: It's the easiest to cure, if diagnosed and treated early. So get checked, people!

And if you're itching to get checked, we got you. We're dubbing today Mole-Check Monday, and we've partnered up with Flywheel to offer free skin checks in New York City tonight (watch for us on Twitter with #SELFCheckFly). But don't fret if you're not in the area: the Skin Cancer Foundation offers these step-by-step instructions for a self-check. Kids’ Summer Sun Safety: Sunscreen, Clothes, Hats, and More

Brush up on your knowledge of sunscreen and sun protection for infants through middle school-aged kids.

Lazy days at the pool or beach are warm weather rituals for many families. But if you're tempted to let your child play outdoors for even a few minutes without the proper sun protection, you’re taking an unhealthy risk.

"It only takes one severe sunburn to potentially double your child's chances of getting melanoma later in life," says Andrea Cambio, MD, FAAD, a board-certified pediatric dermatologist. "We really need to buckle down and protect our young."

Remember how much you marveled at your baby's smooth skin? Don't let the sun destroy that beautiful canvas. Ultraviolet sunlight damages the skin and can lead to wrinkles and cancers later on. There is no such thing as a healthy tan; a tan is a sign of sun damage.

Always put sunscreen on your child before going outside. Make a fun game out of it. Teach your child to spell BEENS to help you remember to cover often-forgotten spots: Back of knees, Ears, Eye area, Neck, and Scalp.

Apply sunscreen 15 to 30 minutes before going outside. Then reapply every 2 hours, or sooner if your child has been swimming. Water-resistant sunscreen wears off -- check the label to see how soon you'll need to reapply.

If your child attends school or daycare, make sure teachers are told to apply sunscreen before any outdoor activities.

Can't decide which sunscreen is best for your child? Cambio and pediatrician Jerome A. Paulson, MD, FAAP, medical director for national and global affairs at the Child Health Advocacy Institute of Children's National Medical Center in Washington, D.C., shared some child-friendly recommendations.

Their No. 1 tip: Choose a sunscreen that contains zinc oxide or titanium dioxide because the compounds are less irritating than others and do not get absorbed into the skin. "These ingredients are probably the safest ones out there right now," Paulson says.

There is some concern that other sunscreen ingredients, particularly oxybenzone and retinyl palmitate (a form of vitamin A), may cause harm. However, both chemicals are FDA approved for use in sunscreens.

Other tips:

Opt for a sunscreen with a sun protection factor (SPF) of 30 or higher.Make sure it's labeled "broad spectrum," which means it blocks both UVA and UVB sunlight.Let your child choose a colored or scented sunscreen. Nix this idea if your child has sensitive skin or an allergic skin disorder, such as eczema.Sunscreen sticks are best for the face because they are less likely to drip.Cambio likes spray-on sunscreens for kids because they are easy to apply. Cover your child's face while spraying, or have him make a funny face or hold his breath for five seconds.

Summer Is Coming!

Spring Break means summer is coming!

I’ve got good news and bad news.

Bad news is:  Spring Break is over.

Good news is:  Summer is Coming!

Being in Florida this past week has gotten me in the mood for summer!  I got up when I woke up (no alarm!).  I enjoyed my coffee while reading blogs and checking Facebook.  Then, I went out for a nice long workout every day.  After that, I spent some time in the sun, caught up on blogging, and truly enjoyed relaxation.

When Kristen and I were driving into Destin on Thursday, I was quickly reminded that in two short months, I would be back there at the beach with my family.  I would very much like to be wearing a new swimsuit and weigh less.

If I think, “I need to lose 12 pounds before summer, that is a bit overwhelming!”  If I break it down into weeks, it seems much more manageable.

I have 10 weeks until we leave for the beach.  If I want to lose 12 pounds before then, I need to lose 1.2 pounds a week.  1.2 pounds a week sounds much more do-able than losing 12 pounds before summer.

So, that’s my summer goal.  The last time I weighed in at Weight Watchers, I weighed 185.  By the time I leave for the beach, in 10 weeks, I would like to weigh 173.

I know what to do.  I just need to do it!

Do you have vacation plans for this summer?  How would you like to look out on the beach?  Set a goal, make a plan, and then break it down by pounds per week so it is more manageable.  Then, share it with us so we can all be accountable to one another!

Summer is Coming…will you be ready?
