Salmonella Risk Prompts Easter Candy Recall

March 1, 2013 -- A candy company is recalling some chocolate-covered marshmallow eggs because of possible salmonella contamination.

Zachary Confections, Inc., says its Zachary Chocolate-Covered Marshmallow Eggs should be thrown out or returned to the store.

The affected candy was shipped to stores in Iowa, Minnesota, North Dakota, South Dakota, and Wisconsin. Look for this information on the side panel of the product packaging next to the Unit UPC bar code label:

Zachary says the candy is possibly contaminated with salmonella, but it doesn't say how that might have happened. The bacteria was found during routine testing. Production is on hold until the FDA and the company finds the source.

No one has reported getting sick from the chocolate-covered marshmallow eggs. An infection caused by salmonella can cause nausea, vomiting, abdominal cramps, diarrhea (sometimes bloody), fever, and headache.

Salmonella Fears Spur Major Recall of Pet Treats

THURSDAY, Feb. 21 (HealthDay News) -- Boots & Barkley, Colorado Naturals and Nature's Deli are among the many pet treat brands being recalled by an American company due to possible salmonella contamination, the U.S. Food and Drug Administration said Thursday.

Kasel Associates Industries Inc. is recalling all pet treats it manufactured between April 20 and Sept. 19, 2012. The company has issued three previous recall notices for specific products produced during this time period.

The action comes after the Colorado Department of Agriculture tested a sample of a Kasel pet treat product from a store and found it to be positive for salmonella. A follow-up FDA inspection at the company found that all of the finished pet treat product samples and 48 out of 87 environmental samples from the manufacturing facility tested positive for salmonella.

More than 10 different types of salmonella were found in the company's treats and the production plant, indicating multiple sources of contamination, the FDA said in an agency news release.

The pet treats made by Kasel are sold at various retailers, including Target, Petco, Sam's Club and Costco. Most of the products have a two-year shelf life.

There have not been any reports of human illness associated with the pet treats, but there have been complaints of illnesses in dogs who ate the treats, according to the agency.

Both people and animals can contract salmonella from handling or eating contaminated products. After handling dry pet treats, people should thoroughly wash their hands as well as any surfaces touched by the products, the FDA said.

Consumers who have the recalled products, or who are unsure of the manufacturing date of their pet treats, should dispose of them safely by placing them in a securely lidded garbage can.

The recall is not related to the FDA's ongoing investigation of jerky pet treats made in China.

Symptoms of salmonella infection in pets include lethargy, diarrhea or bloody diarrhea, fever, vomiting, decreased appetite and abdominal pain. Pets who have eaten the recalled treats and are experiencing any of these symptoms should be taken to a veterinarian, the FDA advised.

The agency also noted that infected, but otherwise healthy pets, can be carriers and infect other animals or people.

Symptoms of salmonella infection in people can include nausea, vomiting, diarrhea or bloody diarrhea, abdominal cramps and fever. People who develop these symptoms after handling the recalled pet treats should see their doctor, the FDA said.

Recall of More Hydrocodone-Acetaminophen Tablets

Dec. 26, 2012 -- More lots of the combination painkiller hydrocodone-acetaminophen are being recalled by Mylan Institutional. The new alert follows a nationwide recall of 101 lots of the drugs issued by Qualitest Pharmaceuticals that occurred earlier this month.

The FDA says the newly recalled lots were manufactured by Qualitest Pharmaceuticals and were repackaged and distributed by Mylan Institutional. The three lots include:  

The recalled bottles are supposed to contain tablets made up of 10 milligrams of hydrocodone and 500 milligrams of acetaminophen. But they are being recalled because the tablets may contain higher amounts of acetaminophen or hydrocodone than indicated on the label.

High doses of acetaminophen may put you at increased risk for liver damage.

Especially at risk are people who:

Take other medications containing acetaminophenHave liver diseaseDrink more than three alcoholic beverages a day

Additionally, too-high doses of hydrocodone can cause increased sedation and/or breathing problems, particularly among the elderly, people with severe kidney or liver impairment, and those who are taking other sedating medications or certain antidepressants.

Firm Stops Making Generic Lipitor After Recall

Nov. 30, 2012 -- After recalling 41 lots of its generic Lipitor -- atorvastatin -- the FDA says Ranbaxy Inc. will stop making the drug "until it has thoroughly investigated" how glass particles got into the medication.

Although Ranbaxy supplied more than 40% of the generic cholesterol-lowering drug sold in the U.S., the FDA says it does not expect a shortage. Five other firms make generic Lipitor: Sandoz, Teva, Apotex, Mylan, and Dr. Reddy's.

The FDA says the tiny glass particles contaminating Ranbaxy's atorvastatin have only "a remote possibility" of causing harm. Ranbaxy says the particles, about the size of a grain of sand, might cause "physical irritation."

Ranbaxy makes atorvastatin, and puts it into pill form at its U.S. facilities. The active ingredient, however, comes from India. Ranbaxy's preliminary investigation suggests that this active ingredient was contaminated with the glass particles, according to FDA public information officer Sarah Clark-Lynn.

To date, there have been no reports of harm linked to Ranbaxy generic Lipitor.

It's not the first sign of trouble for Ranbaxy, the huge Indian pharmaceutical company owned by Japan's Daiichi Sankyo. Last January, the company signed an FDA-requested consent decree closing plants in India and the U.S. until it made "fundamental changes." None of those plants made the recently recalled generic Lipitor products.

The company admitted to several serious charges, including submitting false data to the FDA, failing to prevent contamination of sterile drugs, failing to prevent penicillin contamination of non-penicillin drugs, and inadequate testing of drugs to ensure they kept their potency until their expiration date.

The U.S. Justice Department said the action was "unprecedented in its scope."

Recalled Generic Lipitor

The recalled atorvastatin comes as a white tablet packaged in plastic bottles. The 10-mg tablets bear the imprint "RX12," the 20-mg tablets bear the imprint ''RX828," and the 40-mg tablets bear the imprint "RX829." No 80-mg tablets are included in the recall.
