Focus on Health, Not Fat, in Food Talks With Kids

Teens whose parents harped about weight gain tended to have more unhealthy eating behaviors, study showsTeens whose parents harped about weight gain

HealthDay Reporter

MONDAY, June 24 (HealthDay News) -- There's a right way and a wrong way to persuade your adolescent to eat healthy and help avoid obesity, a new study suggests.

Pointedly connecting food with fatness or talking about needed weight loss is the wrong way and could even encourage unhealthy eating habits, researchers report.

Instead, discussions that focus on simply eating healthfully are less likely to send kids down this road, a new study shows.

"A lot of parents are aware of the obesity problem in the U.S -- it's everywhere you turn -- but they wonder how to talk about it with their children," said study lead author Dr. Jerica Berge of the University of Minnesota Medical School in Minneapolis.

She advises that parents "tell kids to eat more fruits and vegetables because eating them will make them healthy and strong. Don't connect these conversations to weight and size."

The study is published online June 24 in JAMA Pediatrics.

Childhood obesity has more than tripled in adolescents in the United States over the past 30 years, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. This has had a profound effect on children's health, with condition formerly only seen in adults, such as type 2 diabetes and high blood pressure, now being diagnosed in children.

The new study included survey data from more than 2,300 adolescents with an average age of about 14 and more than 3,500 parents.

Overall, the data showed, conversations about eating that focused on a child's supposed need to lose excess weight were linked to a higher risk of problem dieting and other unhealthy eating behaviors among adolescents.

On the other hand, parents who talked about healthy eating and living but did not focus on weight and size were less likely to have children who dieted or engaged in other unhealthy eating behaviors such as anorexia, binge eating or bulimia.

These benefits were seen in both overweight and normal weight teens, the study showed.

Overall, about 28 percent of moms and 23 percent of dads of kids who were not overweight said they had conversations that focused on healthy eating, while only 15 percent of moms and 14 percent of dads who had overweight children said they talked about health.

About 33 percent of moms and 32 percent of dads of non-overweight kids said they discussed weight and the need to lose weight; for overweight kids, that number rose to 60 percent of moms and 59 percent of dads.

Berge stressed that even when parents say all the right things about eating, it doesn't matter much if children see Mom and Dad ignoring their own advice.

It's "do as I do," she said. "Modeling does have a big role in showing kids the type of behavior that you want them to take on."

Katy Perry Talks Fave Snacks, Hot Body Secrets and How She Unwinds

Katy Perry is no stranger to the spotlight, having hit the Hollywood scene almost five years ago now. Perry, who walked the orange carpet (and won Best Female Singer!) at the Kids' Choice Awards this past weekend, wowed onlookers with her midriff-revealing, two-piece ensemble from Herve Leger -- and her enviable figure. Fortunately for us, we not only have her all-over toning move in our back pocket, but a few more of her hot body secrets to share now, too.

The songstress is often on tour -- or traversing the globe for events -- and spends many late nights working. When she returns to her hotel room, girl can be hungry. (And who could blame her?) Her fave midnight snack? PopChips. Not only did Perry recently become a spokeswoman for the brand (whose addictive chips have half the fat of regular ones), but she also just launched her own Kettle Corn flavor, which, if we do say so ourselves, is delicious.

But we know the "Part of Me" singer has more tricks up her sleeve when it comes to looking good for regular press appearances beyond skipping french fries for PopChips. Perry told us that even when she doesn't have the energy, she "knows that working out will give me the energy I need, which motivates me." (Need to amp up your energy levels? Eat these foods.) And if all else fails? "I'll have a double-espresso shot to get me going," Perry added.

So when she needs to look her best (like she did this weekend), Perry cuts out as much bread, sugar and pasta, and opts for water with lemon instead of drinking sugary sodas or juices. Add in regular workouts 3 or 4 times per week, supplementing with fun extras like hiking or spinning at SoulCycle, and you've got the recipe for Perry's sleek physique.

And when it's all said and done, Perry likes nothing more than to relax alone with her cats, or visit one of her fave spas (right now she's a big fan of Ole Henriksen and Kate Somerville) for a facial. She also practices transcendental meditation. We're digging your super-chill vibe, Katy!

Volleyball Champ Kerri Walsh Jennings Talks Baby No. 3

By Gina Walsh
WebMD Magazine - Feature

At the London Olympics last summer, beach volleyball player Kerri Walsh Jennings and her teammate, Misty May-Treanor, set a record that may stand for decades: three straight Olympic gold medals. In the four years since the pair stood atop the podium in Beijing, Walsh Jennings, now 34, had given birth to two sons, one year apart.

As the unbeatable pair watched the U.S. flag rise to claim their third gold, Walsh Jennings had other big news brewing: She was five weeks pregnant with her third child. Here, she muses about pregnancy cravings, juggling two toddlers and an Olympic career, and her plans for the future. (Hint: She's not slowing down.)

1. Did you realize at the Olympics that you were pregnant?

I knew as well as I could know without getting it confirmed. I was late, about a couple of days, and then I got more and more late. And then I started having something happen that had only happened during my previous pregnancies: When I'd sneeze, I'd feel a ... pain in my tummy muscles. I thought, "Hey, this only happens when I'm pregnant!"

2. Boy or girl -- are you going to find out?

We found out on Christmas morning with the boys and we're going to do the same with this one. I have an appointment in two weeks for my 4D ultrasound, and we'll bring in two different ornaments, pink and blue, and have my doctor [secretly] select the right one and put it in a box. We'll wrap it up and put it away for safekeeping, and it will be the last present under the tree that we open.

(Update: Over the holidays she announced she's expecting a baby girl.)

3. How did you juggle training for international competition while riding herd on two toddler boys [Joseph Michael, born in May 2009, and Sundance Thomas, born in May 2010]?

Basically, my husband [beach volleyball player Casey Jennings] and I are a really good team. He made me really comfortable with my schedule. He made our family a priority so Misty and I could go in and win a gold medal, and that took all the pressure off. My little sister KC was our nanny on the road in London. It's always been my dream in life to be a working mom and have this amazing career. We knew the madness of it all, but we do it as a team. In 2011, they went wherever we went: all around the world, from China to Brazil to Europe. In 2012, there was a little less travel for them: They only went to Rome and London. My husband and I want to keep playing and go for the gold in Rio as well, so we'll hopefully see a lot more places as a family. That's my dream.
