Brown Fat Transplants May Spur Weight Loss

person pinching fat

Dec. 10, 2012 -- Mice given brown fat transplants lose weight and avoid the kinds of metabolic changes that lead to type 2 diabetes, even on high-fat diets, a new study shows.

Scientists hope the same approach may one day lead to treatments for obesity and diabetes in people.

Unlike white fat, which stores calories, brown fat burns calories like a furnace. Its main job seems to be to keep the body warm.

People have deposits of brown fat between the shoulder blades and along the spine, around the heart, on the side of the neck, and near the collarbones. But those stores are tiny compared to the pounds of white fat most people carry. Researchers have wondered if adding more brown fat might jump-start a body’s sluggish metabolism.

To test that theory, researchers took a tenth of a gram of brown fat from the backs of male mice and injected it into other mice that were the same sex and age.

Scientists have tried brown fat transplants before but they haven’t worked very well, says researcher Laurie J. Goodyear, PhD, head of the Section on Integrative Physiology and Metabolism at Harvard’s Joslin Diabetes Center in Boston.

Goodyear thinks that was partly because of where the brown fat was placed in the body and how long researchers waited to see results.

This time, Goodyear and her team placed the brown fat in the gut, a place it’s not normally found. Studies have shown that fat in the abdomen, especially fat around the liver, influences insulin resistance and also the release of blood fats called triglycerides.

After eight weeks, mice that got injections of brown fat processed blood sugar more normally, had less insulin resistance, and were leaner than mice given placebo procedures.

“These effects were really very pronounced and very dramatic,” Goodyear says.

Encouraged by their results, the team next gave brown fat transplants to mice on high-fat diets. In both people and mice, high-fat diets reliably lead to weight gain and drive up blood sugar, setting the stage for type 2 diabetes.

Brown fat appeared to blunt some of the effects of the high-fat diet. Transplanted mice maintained their weight and blood sugar better than those who didn’t get transplants. And the more brown fat they got, the stronger the benefits seemed to be.

How is brown fat working? Further testing on transplanted mice showed they had higher levels of proteins and molecules that control how the body handles blood sugar.

The study is published in the Journal of Clinical Investigation.

How soon could the technique be tried in humans?

“I think it’s a ways off,” Goodyear says, “but I think that the studies that we’ve done here really support the idea that it could work.”

Other researchers say the study is interesting, but they aren’t yet convinced that brown fat will someday become a treatment for obesity or diabetes.

“Its purpose is to produce heat and fight cold exposure. It’s certainly not there to combat obesity. It has no purpose in evolution to do that,” says Andre Carpentier, MD, a professor of diabetes and physiology at the University of Sherbrooke in Quebec, Canada.

Carpentier studies brown fat in people, but he was not involved in the current research.

Carpentier says if more studies show that brown fat can safely be increased in the body, it could one day become a tool to fight weight gain and diabetes.

But he says it’s important to keep in mind that even under the best circumstances, the effects of brown fat are likely to be modest.

“You may end up burning a little bit more calories at the end of your day, but it’s not going to be anything close to what you can achieve by doing exercise and diet,” Carpentier says.

Weight Loss Pill Qsymia 'Gaining Traction'

Dec. 26, 2012 -- Sales of the prescription weight loss drug Qsymia, the first such drug to get the FDA's OK in 13 years, are increasing, despite earlier reports of sluggish interest.

For the week ending Dec. 7, more than 2,000 new prescriptions for Qsymia were filled, according to Source Healthcare Analytics, a provider of pharmaceutical market data. That compares to 1,163 filled prescriptions for the week ending Nov. 23.

Depending on who you talk to, the drug, which went on sale in mid-September, is a godsend or a disaster.

Gwen Barton, 57, of New York, participated in a Qsymia clinical trial. She dropped 50 pounds in 18 months. She gained back half of that after the trial ended, then started back on the pill in early December.

The pounds came off again. "I have lost 12 pounds so far and I'm very happy,'' she says. She wants to shed another 40 pounds on her 5-foot-5-inch frame to get to 140 pounds.

Barton offered to share her story through the public relations firm for Vivus, the maker of Qsymia.

When the FDA approved the drug earlier in 2012, Sidney Wolfe, MD, director of Public Citizen's Health Research Group, called the decision ''reckless.''

His opinion hasn't changed, he says. "The history of diet drugs is a disaster," he says.

Michael Miller, chief commercial officer at Vivus, declined to release sales figures or quote prescription numbers until January, when fourth quarter results are in.

"We are pleased," he says of sales. "We have been gaining traction."

The drug is only sold through certified mail-order pharmacies whose personnel have finished a Qsymia-provided training program.

That was part of the risk reduction that Vivus agreed to with the FDA.

Average cost of the recommended dose is $160 for a one-month supply, Miller says.

Insurance coverage is not yet common. "About 1 out of 5 prescriptions are covered," he says. "The average co-pay is $50 or $60."

Qsymia combines two drugs already on the market: phentermine and topiramate.

Phentermine is an appetite suppressant. (It was the ''phen'' part of the popular weight loss combination pill fen-phen. After reports of lung problems and heart valve damage surfaced, related to the ''fen'' or fenfluramine, the FDA requested fenfluramine's withdrawal from market in 1997).

Topiramate may work by suppressing appetite and helping you feel full, according to the drugmaker.

Qsymia is approved only for those who have a body mass index or BMI of 30+, termed obese, or a BMI of 27+, termed overweight, with another weight-related problem such as high blood pressure or high cholesterol.

It is prescribed with the understanding that patients will follow a healthy, reduced-calorie diet and get regular exercise.

Barton says she walks for exercise. She drinks a lot of water and has given up fatty foods, sodas, and another old favorite, doughnuts.

Thanksgiving was not the struggle it once was. "No seconds, no thirds, I didn't bring food home," she says.

Weight loss Is difficult and not particularly rewarding

I just read this article on Slate about a woman who went from 320 pounds, to a size 12.

Of obese chubby: How I lost the weight to, and why you shouldn't admire me for it. -Slate Magazine

For example, suppose you had to starve yourself daily for bare maintenance of your health and physical appearance. Can you do it? Forever? And would you like? I doubt very much that you would do. But still, it's what I need to do.

That is the question. When I was at my lowest weight was, I was STARVING. I always thought about food and I wasn't particularly happy with how I looked.

I think I had so much of my accident the blame on my weight that I was shocked that I'm still unhappy with my appearance when I was so close to goal was. The truth of the matter is, be thin not makes me happy.

Neither does thick.

Happiness and weight loss are two different things. If losing weight will not make you happy, what are the benefits?

You live longer: those extra years will be spent in joy or misery is your choice.People respect you more: as much as we would want to deny, we respect people who are thin. That girl from high school who is still physically fit is the belle of the 20 year high school reunion.

That's about it, folks. If you think losing weight is going to change your life, that you are wrong. Lose weight your body will change. You must change your life.

If you expect to be happy immediately because you have lost weight, then you will be disappointed. If you are setting concrete objectives on living longer and basking in the glow of your performance, you will much more likely to achieve your goal and stay there.

Simple Changes in Lifestyle to Achieve Weight Loss

3c0e4e1e6dd0f351a6dc47de5281dbb5

Guest Post Written by Sachin

Losing weight seems a humungous task for somebody who has just started in this direction. During the initial days one looks for various options available on the net that suits them and there is also a tendency to look out for easy ways to achieve weight loss. There are some who start off with a strict weight loss regimen which they are not able to handle after some days or weeks. This result in reverting back whatever benefit was gained with respect to weight loss. There are some simple weight loss tips which if practiced may help in bringing about significant benefits. Some of these have been discussed below.

Serving in smaller plates and bowls greatly helps in reducing the portion size of the food you consume. A three ounce serving on a big plate looks small, but the same serving on a small plate looks larger.

Positive Changes in Life to Control Weight

It has been found that when you sleep six hours or less before starting your day, the tired body craves sugary or high carbohydrate foods to restore the energy it lacks. Doctors from the University of Chicago studied two hormone levels, ghrelin and leptin, in 12 healthy males while monitoring the men’s appetites and activity levels. When the men received less sleep their leptin levels decreased and ghrelin levels increased. Their appetites were significantly larger, resulting in a 45% increased demand for carbohydrates and other high-calorie foods. Thus, providing sufficient rest to the body helps in avoiding cravings for sugary foods.

Exercise smart instead of hard. Walking helps in diminishing “bad cholesterol”, low-density lipoprotein (LDL) while increasing “good cholesterol”, high-density lipoprotein (HDL). It reduces blood pressure and also helps in enhancing mood. Jogging, running and bicycling are high-impact exercises. Start with a few minutes of stretching and then preferred exercise at least 3 days a week. The length of workout should be increased gradually over time.
lifestyle changes Simple Changes in Lifestyle to Achieve Weight Loss
In a weight loss regimen rewards have a significant role to play. For instance, if you are sacrificing three of your favorite junk foods or candies out of your diet plan, set aside a day when you reward your efforts by eating one of those three foods.

According to researchers some spices like cinnamon, turmeric, paprika, garlic powder, oregano and rosemary have positive benefits on the metabolism of the body.

Hormones, like adrenalin and CRH, are released when you’re too stressed, decreasing your appetite for a short time. This is known as the “fight or flight” response, but when the stressors are events that one can neither fight nor avoid and then you tend to eat more.

In contrast to chicken skin, which contains 30% of the fat that poultry has, edible fruit skins contain most of the nutrients of the fruit. Some of these are blueberries, raspberries, strawberries, prunes, and some others.

Time Management: A Boon to your Life Style

Time management is an often overlooked aspect when going on a weight loss regimen. Planning ahead for the time dedicated for exercise and other important work greatly helps in sustaining your weight loss efforts.

Keeping the kitchen stocked up with fruits, vegetables, healthy meats, grains, cereals, spices, and other relevant items encourages healthy cooking. Apart from these eating healthy home cooked meals is a great way to avoid excess calories which come along with packaged meals and other junk foods.  Whether it’s you who’s cooking, a family member, or house help, one must ensure that every one practices healthy cooking methods, and ingredients. Using less oil, low salt, fresh produce, start showing their results in no time.

Thus if one adheres to these simple weight loss tips one can not only bring about positive changes in one’s lifestyle but also be more healthy and fit.

With negativity as a catalyst for change: motivation for weight loss

Our stores often smack in the face, negativity, especially when we are on our lowest point.  Using negativity in reverse fashion you can turn into a powerful catalyst for change, and help fuel your motivation for weight loss.

Negativity is independent of people.  Of corporate downsizing to faulty toes, crap happens.  Let's say you feel kind of schlumpy.  Then, bam!  A friend comments that you've placed on a few pounds.  A friend called me in tears recently about an episode like this. It happens to the best of us.

The question is then, does not want to cross your path is negativity about, but what you will do when it does.  Will allow you to seep into your subconscious, those seeds of negativity to take root?  Conversely, you will just drop off the boat and to shrink?

Most people seem to choose the options above.  If someone comments on your weight, for example, you can choose the option to set up a home and allow thought in your mind.   You can get discouraged, and your subconscious will begin to believe and act on that input.  Your mind, with the support of those pesky thought, you can trick the body into believing you don't deserve or cannot reach you after.  Acting on that internal dialog, you can eat more, exercise less and ultimately prove the unconscious negative statement true.

Sound farfetched?  Barely.  You can trace back to a root thought each manifestation.

Catalyst for Change, CC Liscense by AlasisLet's say you are more optimistic, though, and you choose two, causing the snarky comment to roll of your back.  You can deny the statement and let it go, zero wasting time on it.  This tactic is pretty effective at destroying unwanted thoughts.

Option two can resemble the wiser choice, and it is indeed better than an option.  However, I would like to present you with a third option; that requires a bit of courage, but has the potential to be much more results.  This evasive in more motivation for weight loss with the help of negativity as fodder and a catalyst for change.

Let's stay with the example of someone comment on your weight.  It often happens to my clients and it affects everyone almost the same way;  anger or self-loathing.  Instead of spiral in negativity or ignore the comment, why not take a good, hard look at the facts, make you feel, and how they use that knowledge as fuel to bring you over to see the change.

Yes, like a comment, "Hey, you pack a few extra pounds?," or "so, when are you due?" (when you're not even pregnant) sticking your ego.  It can push you cower, refuting, or even reciprocate.  Probably, you'll only want to go to wolf down a pint of ice cream or another comfort food to reduce the stabbing.

Instead, once you become aware of what happens, why not try a technique called VAPOR?  Using this simple method, you can successfully (albeit not easily) negativity to use as a catalyst for change.

Read more about how I vapour ( AValidate, ccept, Plan, bstinate, O Results) use and how this simple mental technique can bring about quick motivation for weight loss.  I'm sure that not many trainers will tell you, "Don't waste the negativity", but I am!  Consider it a gift.  Read the article here: how to use VAPOR as motivation for weight loss (coming 1 June)

Goal Setting Tools and Forms for Weight Loss Success.

Goal setting tools help for the bedrock of any weight loss program or fitness regimen. I've

learned, through trial and error, that without the right goals and ture vision, I was going to keep running my chubby little legs on the hamster wheel of weight loss.

Sure, I knew I wanted to be "fit." I knew I wanted to feel comfortable in my own sin. I wanted to like myself again. But, because my goals weren't clear and I had no practice in the art of active visualization, I had no real way to tell if I was getting real results.

So, I came across a few sources, namely Precision Nutrition and Burn the Fat, Feed the Muscle, and they talked about the importance of goal setting and how to do it properly. One of the best books on this subject I've read is Maximum Achievement by Brian Tracey. You can apply the whole book to any part of life, including your health and weight loss endeavors.

I reset and tweaked my goals, and learned how to visualize with passion. I felt it in my bones that my desires would manifest. They steadily have. Holy crap! This stuff works! Using my brain, mustering up some mojo, and utilizing a few goal setting tools started producing results.

I constantly upgrade my goals. I religiously track them, too. It helps give me the weight loss motivation I need. When I go about reassessing my goals and forming my new ones, I discovered they all fit under these four guidelines:

The 4 C's Of Goal Setting

Crystal Clear. You simply can't hit a target if you don't know what it is. Goals must be super precise. "Look sexy" = bad goal. "Be 12% Body Fat" = good goal.

Conquerable. Yes, goals must be big enough to scare you a little. They have to be grand enough to keep you motivated. Just make sure they're actually doable. Discouragement will plaque those who try for something that's not meant for their body. However, most anything is possible. Listen closely to the voice within and it'll give you your heading.Goal Setting Tools

Checklist Worthy. If it's not a goal that doesn't have an ending date, chuck it. If you'll never know exactly when you arrive at the finish line, you can't check it off your list. It's never accomplished. "Feel better in my skin" = bad. "Lose 2 lbs a week for ten weeks to achieve my goal weight of 130 lbs." = much better.

Charismatic. If your goal isn't imbued with passion, why the heck are you wasting your time with it? If you don't often wake up like a 6 year old on Christmas morning, geared up to work towards your goals, then it simply doesn't have enough fire power to keep your motivation flame glowing.

Stop Emotional Eating. Motivation for Weight Loss.

Emotional eating is a sure ticket to unhappiness and fatness. Sorry if that sounds insensitive, but it's true. I've struggled with food addiction long before I knew there was such a thing. If you've ever thought (or acted) like food was your friend, you might want to examine your habits.

Uncontrolled eating, food addiction, and sugar addiction are a common problem. So common, in fact, they seem "normal." De-stressing by wolfing down some chips or McDonalds, eating tons of sweets during down times, and believing in the pseudo-power of the chocolate/love relationship is NOT NORMAL. There is another way!

My years of yo-yo dieting were simply the result of emotional eating that I couldn't control. I never even knew it was a problem. I would go to the kitchen for snacks when I wasn't even hungry, or have a binge after diet stint and I would think to myself, "I was just stressed. I'll do better next time." But the diet stints became shorter and the binging periods became longer, until I was eating crap all the time. I couldn't see the cycle I had created. I couldn't understand why I just couldn't control my eating, when it seemed everyone else in the world could.

Finally, one day, I decided to just sit for a few moments and get down to the deeper part of me. I asked myself why chocolate mattered so much to me. I asked myself if chocolate served some purpose for me, or if it was symbolic of anything I needed. I just got quiet and listened. And, lo and behold, the answers came.

For me, chocolate was the first issue I had to deal with. And it was even difficult for me to Emotional Eatingadmit it was a problem. What I learned about myself is that chocolate was love in my subconscious mind. My grandparents comforted me with chocolate as a child. My husband used it to woo me. I would eat it when I went out with my friends to share some laughs. I would use it as a pain reliever during my time of the month. When my husband started working tons of hours, I used chocolate as my company at night.

Hitting rock bottom with the yo-yo dieting forced me to look for permanent solutions. I just got over having to deal with the struggle all the time. It was sucking the life out of me.

I firmly believe the solution to every problem is already within us. We just have to ask, be still, and listen. The first step in stopping emotional eating is to go within and find out the reason you're self-sabotaging. What emotions or situations are you using food or sugar to cover up or soothe? Once you know why, you can begin to deal with the actual issue, instead of putting a band-aid over it.

For me, I had to admit my loneliness and find ways to constructively deal with that. I also had to train my mind to believe that food does not equal love and is NOT a necessity to have a good time. I can go out and enjoy life without a crutch.

Food truly is fuel, not comfort, and I have made that my mantra. Food is fuel. Food is fuel. Sure, crappy food would taste good, but it'll make my machine run and look like crap. If I sincerely love and care about my well-being, I'll take care of myself and strive to live a free and healthy life.

This is a simple, but not easy process. Self-discovery and actual transformation hurts a little - all growth does. But, if you truly want to be free, you've got to do it. Here are the six steps to overcome emotional eating, put as simply as I know how:

1. Ask yourself "why"
2. Be still
3. Listen to the answers
4. Understand the deeper reasoning
5. Deal constructively with the underlying issues
6. Live in freedom

Too simple, you're thinking? Yeah, no one wants it to be that simple. They want it to be complicated, to help them hide behind labels, excuses, and disorders. But the truth, the real truth, is always simple. Just like no one wants to accept that eating healthily and exercising is the only way to permanently lose weight.

Go within, find your answer.
Know that you have the power to overcome your issues.
Believe you can succeed.
See you on the other side!
