$10,000 MEMORY CHALLENGE RESULTS

The biggest memory competition ever held now has a winner. Co-created by me and Grand Master of Memory Ed Cooke, then announced on this blog, it challenged “ordinary” people to learn to memorize a pack of cards in less than a minute.

Irina Zayats, a 24 year-old Ukrainian woman, showed just how quickly a brain can be trained. Miss Zayats had no previous experience using memory techniques, but she learned to perform the gold standard of memory skills (memorizing a shuffled deck of cards) in just five days. In doing so, she won $10,000 and, to her surprise, a job offer from Memrise, the learning platform that ran the competition.

How did she do it? Here’s the full blog post, and an incredible video of her performance is below:

Facebook Home on HTC First Available Today, 5 Things You Need to Know

Facebook Home Info

Last week Mark Zuckerberg unveiled Facebook Home for Android. It's not a Facebook phone, it's not an operating system, and it's not an app. Zuck says it's a way to "put people first instead of apps."

So, what is it?

I'd tell my grandma it's a Facebook screen saver.

When your phone is resting, photos and status updates from your newsfeed are visible, and even if your phone is locked, you can still like and comment on posts.

Facebook will now be at the core of your mobile experience (as if it's not already dominating social in so many ways). And today, you can buy the HTC First, which comes pre-installed with Facebook Home for $99 with a two-year contract. Nothing is in the works for iOS.

The 5 things you should care about:

Your Newsfeed (and your friends baby pics) will be everywhere: From the moment you turn on your phone, you'll see your newsfeed, status updates, and all - not just FB - notifications (new email, Twitter mentions, Instagram likes)Chat heads: Functionality allows you to seamlessly keep chatting with friends from any app. Data: Since Facebook Home is constantly downloading status updates and photos, consider changing your image quality setting to "low" so that you're not draining monthly data. The default setting is "medium" but you can also change to "high." Privacy: If you want to try Facebook Home and then decide you don't like it, you can turn it off in your Home Settings. And If you like Home but don't want it to appear as your lock screen, you have that option too. Other Droids: Not in the market for a new HTC First? Users who own the HTC One X, HTC One X+, Samsung Galaxy S III or the Samsung Galaxy II can download Home for free from the Google Play store.

So, are you gonna go get Facebook Home? Tweet us @StephaniePaige and @SELFMagazine.

Huge binge, feeling so ashamed and still hungry today :(

Hi guys, I don't know what came over me yesterday. It's like when I started eating, my body just wanted more, more, more and I could not stop :( I ate just over 3000 calories yesterday, when CC calculators reckon my maintenance is about 1750.

I knew I would probably overeat a little yesterday, it was a friend's birthday party with a bbq and drinks and all that. But I eat healthy before I went, and told myself to be sensible. I ended up having 2 chicken wings, 1 roll, 1 rib, 1 chicken drumstick, 2 sausages, then countless pieces of cake and chocolate - it's always the sweet stuff that really gets me :(

The weird thing is I didn't even get that overly full feeling until just before I went to bed (after eating another cookie..). And I am actually hungry again now - I've drank a big glass of water to make sure I'm hydrated.

I'm in a real dilemma now. I was planning on upping my calories a little during the week with the aim of not feeling the urge to binge at weekends, and eating back my exercise calories. I am not in a position to do loads of exercise - I've been really pushing myself lately (only had a few days off exercise in the past 3-4 weeks) and now my CFS and other life stuff (got alot of bad family stuff going on right now, plus I am having to start some work so I will have less time and energy to exercise) means I am feeling quite exhausted.

I wish I was able to purge it all. I wish I had the willpower to stop myself in the first place. I am trying to maintain around 114lbs at 5'4, 22, lightly to moderately active, and this amount of food is just too much! I feel like I shouldn't eat atall today, but I'm hungry :(

If I ate more in the week, I worry that I would just gain and still lack the willpower not to binge at the weekends. I have such a sweet tooth... help me guys :(
